Vice director
Head of Division
The Territory and Environment division (RU) produces statistical informations on the use of the territory and environment and related consequences:
- The use of natural resources, such as soil, air, raw materials and energy
- Agricultural production
- Services provided associated with territory such as tourism or mobility and transport
- The physical and financial consequences of services provided (such as pressure on the environment, change in land cover, financial consequences in the primary sector, transport costs, environmental protection expenditure)
It also compiles multi-thematic syntheses and carries out cross-sectional tasks:
- Monitoring the sustainable development to track Switzerland’s progress towards sustainable development
- Quality of life indicators in Switzerland’s eight largest cities within the European City Statistics programme, enabling comparisons to be made between cities at international level
- Indicator system for the Federal Council and Parliament dedicated to monitoring the objectives of the legislature plan
- Definition of the territorial typologies to enable spatial analyses.
Informations are presented and made available in the form of results of discussed surveys, syntheses such as pocket statistics or yearbooks, indicator systems and complex analyses. In order to establish a solid foundation for the production of statistics, agreements have been concluded with different partners. These regulate the availability of data or financial participation. Some projects are carried out jointly or co-financed by other offices, cantons, cities or associations.

Head of Section
The UNR section is in charge of producing statistical information on the state of the environment and how it is evolving, on Switzerland’s progress towards sustainable development, on agriculture and food as well as on selected regional and international disparities. It develops and maintains indicator systems in the field of sustainable development (Agenda 2030), the environment, the legislature plan and the quality of life in cities. It compiles the environmental accounts and the primary sector accounts which are satellite accounts of the national accounts. It is also in charge of defining and revising the territorial typologies (e.g. agglomerations or typology of the communes).

Head of Section
The MOBIL section is in charge of implementing the general and integrated concept of statistics in the area of mobility and transport, as well as coordinating the relevant offices of the DETEC. Based on surveys, it collects important data on the behaviour of the Swiss resident population in terms of mobility, public transport and freight transport by rail and road. It compiles other statistics based on administrative data such as those concerning the total vehicle stock, air traffic and transport accidents. Finally, the section compiles statistics on the cost and financing of transport, showing for each mode of transport the origin of the costs and by whom these are covered.

Head of Section
The Geoinformation Section is the specialised service and centre of excellence for geospatial data, geoinformatics and the treatment of digital images. It maintains contact with partner and research institutions in these areas. The section is responsible for the Swiss land use statistics and manages, via GEOSTAT, a geographic information system (GIS) and a data warehouse of geocoded data. Based on the interpretation of aerial images, the land use statistics provide detailed information on the current state of and changes in land use and cover in Switzerland. It thus produces a solid basis for monitoring the use of the territory. Geoinformatics offers basic data and services for the production of maps and spatial analyses.

Head of Section
The tourism section (TOUR) compiles the statistics on tourist accommodation (HESTA) and the supplementary accommodation statistics (PASTA) which provide information on the situation and development of supply (accommodation capacity) and demand (arrivals, overnight stays, visitors' country of origin) in hotels, campsites, collective accommodation and holiday homes used for commercial purposes. Hotel data are published every month while data for other accommodation categories are published every quarter.
