Migration is the movement of a person the effect of which is the transfer of their main residence from a place of origin to a place of destination. These movements can concern the Swiss population as well as the foreign population. In internal migration, only those changes of residence within the country are taken into consideration. Migration is measured in terms of arrivals and departures in or from a commune or canton. In internal migration a distinction is made between:
- Intracantonal migration, i.e. between two communes situated in the same canton, and
- Intercantonal migration, i.e. between two communes situated in two different cantons.
