More and more Swiss citizens are settling abroad and are registered at an embassy or consulate general. Almost two thirds of them live in Europe, the majority in France, Germany and Italy. A quarter live in America, mainly in the United States and Canada.
Swiss nationals living abroad are younger than their compatriots living in Switzerland.
In the individual countries of residence the age structure of Swiss citizens living there varies greatly in some cases.
Three quarters of Swiss abroad have one or more additional citizenships. This proportion, however, varies according to the country of residence.
