At present, 6 women in employment out of 10 have a part-time job, compared with 1.8 men in employment out of 10. Consequently, part-time work is a typical characteristic of women's working life. A part-time job often entails precarious working conditions, insufficient social security coverage (e.g. pension fund) and fewer opportunities for further education and training and career advancement. On the other hand, part-time work does provide the opportunity to pursue other activities, such as caring for one's children, helping other people and doing housework.
From 1991 to 2010, part-time work has increased among women and men in employment. However, after that women’s part-time stabilized.
