Economically inactive persons

Just over a third of women and a quarter of men aged 15 and over are economically inactive persons, i.e. they are neither in employment nor unemployed and looking for work. Economically inactive persons are for the most part pensioners. Among economically inactive women, one in ten is a homemaker. In contrast, the share of homemakers among men is negligible.

Overall, just under half of economically inactive women aged 15 to 64 are either homemakers (three out of ten), or pensioners (two out of ten). In contrast, among men the proportion of pensioners is clearly higher than it is among women, accounting for around a quarter of economically inactive persons of working age.
