Quantities consumed

The indicators on consumed quantities of private households in Switzerland are presented here as a complement to the detailed expenditure tables and follow the same hierarchical structure. They are available for food and beverages as well as for fuels. The quantities are measured either in kilograms or litres, according to each aggregate.

It is recommended to read these tables together with the overview tables since those contain supplementary information such as the household composition. This allows further analysis of the indicators on consumed quantities through calculation of combined indicators, for example the consumed quantities per person.

Consumed quantities by household characteristics

The indicators presented above, which are means over all households in Switzerland, give a good insight into the average consumed quantities in Switzerland. Yet, these numbers don't illustrate the variations due to the household composition, to the income situation or to other dimensions.

Separate tables for different subgroups can show those variations. However, due to the rather small annual HBS sample size (3416 households in 2021), tables for subgroups are only available based on a pooled sample of three years.

Tables with consumed quantities are available split into the following subgroups (downloadable EXCEL file in French, also available in German and Italian):

Additionally, there are tables with consumed quantities for the following household types (combined with other dimensions):

The tables above are also available in one EXCEL file as complete sets for each three-year pooled sample (in French, available in German or Italian as well):
