The income and expenditure of private households in Switzerland are presented here in the form of overview tables of the household budget.
Income components are displayed as positive numbers whereas the expenditure ones are displayed as negative numbers.
This allows subtotals, such as gross income, disposable income or savings, to be shown in a transparent and understandable way.

The file with the overview tables contains supplementary indicators like the household composition or the share of specific categories of households (for example, the proportion of tenant households).
Detailed tables with more than 500 indicators on expenditure (structured along five hierarchical levels) are also available, as well as tables with indicators on consumed quantities of food and beverages, and fuels.
The household budget by household characteristics
The indicators presented above, which are means over all households in Switzerland, give a good insight into the average household budget in Switzerland. Yet these numbers don't illustrate the variations due to household composition, income situation or other dimensions.
Separate tables for different subgroups can show those variations. However, due to the rather small annual HBS sample size (3452 households in 2020), tables for subgroups are only available based on a pooled sample of three years.

The report on the distribution of wealth was compiled by the Federal Department of Finance in collaboration with the Federal Statistical Office. It principally analyses the following aspects: the development of income and wealth and their components, their primary distribution and redistribution as well as the structure and development of use of the income.

The report on income inequality and its redistribution by the government describes the components, the distribution and the redistribution of the incomes of private households from 1998 to 2009.

The report on the financial situation of households analyses the income components and distribution of private households from both the macro- and micro-economic perspectives. The analysis is based mainly on National Accounts data from 1990 to 2004 and on Income and Consumption Survey results from 1998 to 2004.
