Educational level

The educational level of the population continues to increase. In 2023, 43.6% of the economically active population held a tertiary level diploma compared with 21.4% in 1996. Over the same period, the share of persons with upper secondary level education fell to 41.3% (1996: 59.3%) and the share of persons without post-compulsory training (lower secondary level) to 14.4% (1996: 19.3%). The share of women with tertiary-level education and training is increasing sharply. However, the share of persons with tertiary level education was still higher among men (45.1%) than women (42.0%) in 2023. 26.4% of economically active persons of foreign nationality had not completed post-compulsory training (Swiss nationals: 9.6%).
