Social and Economic Conditions of Student Life

The survey on the social and economic situation of students (SSEE) is a quantitative survey, based on an online questionnaire. It has been successfully carried out four times (in 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2016) and will be repeated in 2020.

The survey population is comprised of all students registered at a Swiss higher education institution (university, federal institutes of technology, university of applied sciences and university of teacher education) with a view to obtaining a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree or another qualification. This base population is clearly defined and identifiable thanks to the files of the Swiss University Information System (SIUS).

The survey 2013 is carried out on the basis of a representative sample of approximately 26,000 people (10,000 university students and 16,000 students at universities of applied sciences and universities of teacher education). The participation rate is 69%.

Data is weighted on the basis of the survey participation rate and corrected according to the nonresponse level. An adjustment is made on the known characteristics of the population group. This weighting enables an estimation of the results for the population as a whole.
