Supplementary accommodation in 2022 Supplementary accommodation with 6.6% growth in 2022

15.06.2023 - Supplementary accommodation recorded 17.4 million overnight stays in 2022. In comparison with the preceding year, this represents an increase of 6.6%. More overnight stays were thus generated than before the COVID-19 pandemic. Demand from foreign visitors increased by 68.9% to 5.1 million. In contrast, the number of overnight stays by domestic guests fell to 12.3 million (-7.4%). These are some of the definitive findings from the supplementary accommodation statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

When added to the hotel statistics, these findings provide an overall balance for the tourist accommodation in Switzerland. In 2022, 55.6 million overnight stays were registered in Switzerland, corresponding to an increase of 21.3% from 2021. Compared with 2019, the record year before the pandemic, the number of overnight stays fell by 1.1%. In 2022, domestic visitors registered 33.4 million overnight stays (-2.6% compared with 2021) and foreign visitors 22.2 million (+91.8%).

Fewer Swiss guests but many more foreign visitors in holiday homes

In 2022, commercially-run holiday homes accounted for the majority of overnight stays in supplementary accommodation (44.0%). With an annual total of 7.7 million overnight stays, demand increased by 1.3% compared with 2021. Domestic demand declined by 15.8% and reached 5.0 million overnight stays. This decline is offset by the strong growth in foreign demand, which increased by 63.6% and resulted in 2.7 million overnight stays. Guests from Europe (2.2 million /+ 49.8%) generated 83.7% of the overnight stays from foreign visitors.

In 2022, the average length of stay in commercially-run holiday homes was 5.9 nights. Spread over the seven major regions, demand was strongest in the Lake Geneva region with 3.1 million overnight stays.

Despite growth: collective accommodation below pre-pandemic level

Despite a strong increase of 46.2% to 4.9 million in 2022 in collective accommodation, the number of overnight stays was still below the pre-pandemic level. Throughout the year, the number of overnight stays fell by 13.2% compared with 2019 (5.7 million).

In 2022, domestic guests accounted for 4.1 million overnight stays, corresponding to an increase of 35.0%. Foreign visitors (80.5% of whom came from Europe), registered 832 000 overnight stays (+146.4%). The average length of stay in collective accommodation was 2.4 nights. With 1.3 million overnight stays, Eastern Switzerland held top position among the major regions.

Decrease registered at campsites

After last year's record level at campsites (5.4 million), the number of overnight stays fell by 10.7% to 4.8 million. The decline (-25.3%) in domestic customers (3.3 million) could not be compensated for by the increase in foreign demand (+51.8% to 1.6 million).

At 97.2%, guests from Europe accounted for the largest share of foreign demand. The average length of stay in 2022 was 2.9 overnight stays. With 1.2 million overnight stays, Espace Mittelland was the major region with the highest number of overnight stays at campsites, followed by Ticino (1.1 million).
