The Household Production Satellite Account (SHHP) extends the central framework of the national accounts, in which only a small part of the unpaid productive activities of private households are taken into account. It thus makes it possible to measure the economic importance of unpaid work and assess its share in the extended economy. In 2020, households accounted for 41.4% of gross value added in the extended total economy.
The basis for the SHHP is formed by the productive activities of private households that do not take place on the labour market, i.e., the unpaid work of private individuals. Such activities are initially measured in terms of the time invested in them . Using a market costs method, they are then given a monetary value. This method calculates how much money it would cost if the unpaid work was carried out by paid workers; the average labour costs by occupational group are used as reference values.
In 2020, the permanent resident population aged 15 and over in Switzerland worked 9.8 billion hours of unpaid work. In comparison, 7.6 billion hours were worked for pay.
In total, the unpaid work carried out is estimated to have a monetary value of CHF 434.2 billion. Domestic work accounts for the largest part, at CHF 318.9 billion or around 73.4% of the total amount. Care-related tasks are estimated at CHF 82.1 billion (18.9% of the total amount), and voluntary work at CHF 33.2 billion (7.7% of the total amount). Altogether, the contribution of women accounts for 59.6% of the total amount.
