In Switzerland there are about 4.0 million private households (at the end of 2022). Over a third of these households are one-person households, which corresponds to 17% of the permanent resident population. Couples without children and households with at least one child aged under 25 each account for nearly 30% of all households. The average household size is 2.18 persons.
Since 1970, the number of one-person households has almost quadrupled and that of couples without children has doubled. In the same period, the number of couples with children aged under 25 has remained almost unchanged.
