In 2022, 322 387 motor vehicles were newly registered in Switzerland, 7.8% fewer than in 2021. Compared with 2019, the last 'pre-covid year', the decline was even 21.2%. The war in Ukraine also contributed to this, exacerbating the pandemic-related supply bottlenecks.
Passenger cars accounted for around three quarters of new registrations. A total of 229 403 cars were newly put into circulation on Swiss roads in 2022: 5.2% fewer than in 2021 and even 26.6% fewer than in 2019. Once again, however, there was an increase in electric cars: in 2022, 17.7% of newly registered passenger cars were purely electric, 4.4 percentage points more than in 2021 (13.2%).
