Municipal boundaries: time series since 1850

The SFSO provides digitized municipal boundaries of Switzerland from 1850 to 2016. From 2016 onwards, municipal boundaries will be available in swissBOUNDARIES3D from swisstopo.

The « Municipal boundaries: time series since 1850 » product from the SFSO provides municipal geometries for all municipal states between 01.01.1850 and 31.12.2016 for the entire territory of Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. For the period from 2016 to the present day, this time series is supplemented by the swissBOUNDARIES3D dataset published by swisstopo.

Administrative and geographical characteristics of municipalities

Information on the districts and cantons in which the municipalities are located, as well as their coordinates and altitude, is available in the dataset attribute table.

History of the municipalities

The history of municipal mutations is available on the Swiss Municipalities application (Applikation der Schweizer Gemeinden), and explanations of these mutations are provided in the document "Historical list of municipalities in Switzerland - Explanation and use" (Historisiertes Gemeindeverzeichnis der Schweiz - Erläuterungen und Anwendung).

Geodata

The 1850-2016 municipal boundary geometry datasets are provided in Shapefile, GeoPackage and GeoJSON formats. They are projected in the National Survey LV95. The datasets are available in the Geodata tab.
