In recent years, the settlement and urban area has developed in parallel with the number of inhabitants.
Accordingly, the consumption of settlement and urban area per inhabitant has remained almost the same: in 2018 it was 396 m2, compared to 391 m2 in 1985. However, in the intermediate period the 400 m2 mark was just exceeded.
Settlement and urban area per inhabitant: key indicator for sustainable spatial development
The calculations are based on municipality data and the following procedure:
1. assigning a unique survey year to the municipality by intersecting the aerial photo cover with the center coordinates.
2a. For the table of nationwide results (3 time periods): Assignment of the mean annual resident population* (ESPOP, STATPOP) for the corresponding year to each municipality.
2b. For the table with the most recent results (4 time periods, perimeter of the most recent data status): Assignment of the mean permanent resident population (ESPOP, STATPOP) for the corresponding year to each municipality.
* The variable "mean annual resident population" is no longer tracked, therefore the variable "mean permanent resident population" is used in the most recent results.
3. calculation of the quotient of settlement area per inhabitant, differentiated by type of use according to the standard nomenclature NOAS04.
4. summation of the municipal data to the figures for the cantons.
