Assisted reproductive technology

The data concern in vitro fertilisation methods (IVF), in which fertilisation occurs outside of the human body. In Switzerland nearly 3% of livebirths occur after medically assisted reproduction with in vitro methods.

The percentage of multiple births following in vitro treatments was 15.9% in 2017. In 2022 the percentage of multiple births had fallen to 3.7% of births following in vitro treatments. Since multiple births are often associated with complications during pregnancy and birth, this is an important development for neonatal health.
