Teaching is the UTE area with the highest costs. UTE costs totalled CHF 700 millions.
At the UTE, the main expenditure is on basic education (65%), which as is the case in the UAE, is practice-based. The costs of applied development and research range between 7% and 24% of all costs depending on the UTE. At 15%, however, the average cost is relatively low.
The cost indicator considered here is calculated as the ratio of costs for basic education to the number of students in basic education (headcount). The graph shows the costs per student in 2012 compared with 2021. Figures below the diagonal line equate to a decrease in costs per student. At the UAS the value of the indicator decreased almost for all departments. This was also the case for the UTE.
