Until the early 1980s, the falling infant mortality rate was mainly due to a decline in deaths in the first week of life. Since the early 1990s, this decline could be attributed to a reduction in deaths of infants aged between one month and one year. In the last twenty years, the infant mortality remained relatively stable. In this period, about 70% of deceased infants died within the first week of their life.
