The share of wooded areas in the total territory of Switzerland is 32%. The actual forest accounts for almost 90% of all wooded areas.
In total, they have conquered an additional area of 589 km2 between 1985 and 2018 (+5%). This corresponds approximately to the size of Lake Geneva. The increases were almost exclusively in the Alpine region, where trees grew again on abandoned alpine farming areas and where a rise in the tree line is also beginning to emerge as a result of climate change.
