Study grants and loans

In 2021, the cantons paid a total of CHF 372 million in grants and loans to persons in education. This represents one percent of all public education expenditure. Almost the entire amount were allocated as grants (95%).
7,3% of the 625 055 people who completed post-obligatory school obtained a study grant and 0,4% a loan.

The conditions for the allocation of grants and loans are determined by the cantons by law. An important harmonization process has been put in place with the concordat on study grants, which came into force on 1 March 2013. While the concordat formulates minimum requirements and standards, the cantons retain their autonomy and have sufficient freedom to take account of their particular situation and go beyond these provisions.
