The conditions for the allocation of grants and loans are determined by the cantons by law. An important harmonization process has been put in place with the concordat on study grants, which came into force on 1 March 2013. While the concordat formulates minimum requirements and standards, the cantons retain their autonomy and have sufficient freedom to take account of their particular situation and go beyond these provisions.

The essential information can be visualized using interactive diagrams, providing an overview by canton, level of education and year. The cantonal offices (see link "Adressen Stipendienstellen" under "Further Information") provide a wide range of information, such as revisions to laws, the introduction of projects, etc., which have an influence on the evolution curves.
