Imprisonment and juvenile placement 2017 Slight increase in number of juvenile placements, high occupancy level of prisons in French-speaking Switzerland

7% increase in number of detainees in 2024

Neuchâtel, 5 February 2018 (FSO) - On 6 September 2017, 477 young offenders were placed outside of their families, an increase of 1.5% compared with the previous year. On the same day, 6863 adults were detained in detention centres, 1% fewer than the previous year. Occupancy in French and Italian-speaking Switzerland (at 107%) was 20 percentage points higher than in prisons under the penal agreement of North-Western and Central Switzerland and 27 percentage points higher than in Eastern Switzerland. These are the latest findings of the reference date survey on imprisonment and juvenile detention produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
