The survey on imprisonment provides information on the number of prisoners by type of imprisonment, gender and nationality (from 2004) and information on places and occupancy rates in penal institutions. Deaths, suicides (from 2004) and escapes (from 2010) are recorded for the previous year. The statistics enable deductions to be made concerning imprisonment orders across Switzerland by type of custody and trends in the prison population and places.
