Medical practices and primary care medicine in Switzerland 2018-2021 Primary care doctors: half as many doctors per inhabitant in rural areas as in towns

24.11.2023 - At the end of 2021, 9184 primary care doctors were working in Switzerland. The working week of doctors in rural areas was on average 8% longer (in hours) than that of doctors in towns. There was one primary care doctor per 1000 inhabitants in urban centres and 0.4 per 1000 inhabitants in rural areas. These are some of the results from a new publication from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).

You can find further information such as tables and graphs in the press releases in German, French and Italian. The English version only contains the lead of the press release.
