Activity rate of 15- to 64-year-olds

This indicator provides information on the labour market participation of working-age people. It shows the share of persons participating in the labour market in the total population aged between 15 and 64.

From an integration perspective, the aim is to align the activity rates between the different population groups.

Definitions

Economically active persons: this includes employed and unemployed persons based on the ILO definition. Economically active persons constitute the labour supply.

Full-time equivalents (FTE): this is determined by taking the total number of actual hours worked in the Swiss economy and dividing this total by the average number of hours worked in a full-time job.

The number of FTEs is calculated differently for employed and unemployed persons based on ILO definition:

  • Employed persons: the actual hours worked by every employed person are divided by the average actual hours worked by persons working full time in the corresponding economic sector. For people who are underemployed, the additional hours they would like to work are also taken into account.
  • Unemployed persons: activity rate desired (e.g. 50% = 0.5 FTE)

Methodologies

The activity rate is calculated by dividing the number of persons who are economically active by the reference population, i.e. the total resident population aged between 15 and 64, and multiplying by 100.

The activity rate in full-time equivalents (FTEs) is calculated by dividing the number of persons who are economically active in full-time equivalents by the reference population, i.e. the total resident population aged between 15 and 64, and multiplying by 100.
