Explanatory note:
• A decline was seen in all three types of sentence: custodial sentences -14%, community service -11% and custodial sentences under electronic monitoring -9%. Compared with the previous year, there is little change in the percentage shares of each sentence type.
• 2016 was a “record year": All three types of sentence showed values higher than the previous years. The percentage change 2017 vs. 2016 was -18%. Comparison of 2017 with 2015 shows the change was 5 percentage points lower at -13%.
• Across Switzerland, four prisons closed in 2017.
