Neuchâtel, 23.03.2009 (FSO) - The overall mortality rate continued to fall in 2007, i.e. life expectancy continued to rise. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer and dementia are the three most frequent causes of death. Cardiovascular diseases show the biggest decline, while dementia as a disease of old age is on the rise.

In 2007, 22,613 deaths caused by cardiovascular disease (37% of all deaths) and 16,022 caused by cancer (26%) were registered among the Swiss resident population. In addition, deaths from dementia accounted for 7% of all deaths, while external causes and respiratory diseases accounted, respectively, for 6% of deaths.
