University costs are divided into five service types (cost carriers): Basic education: All activities prioritising or related to the teaching and education of matriculating students at the basic level (bachelor, master bologna, diploma and licentiate). Teaching at advanced level: All activities prioritising or related to the teaching and education of students studying at an advanced level (doctorate, DEA, DESS). Research & Development (R&D): Research and experimental development (R&D) comprises all creative work undertaken in a systematic way to deepen knowledge or obtain new insights. That also includes insights relating to people, culture and society as well as using knowledge for new applications. R&D covers activities in basic research, applied research and experimental development. Further education: All activities pertaining to further education (MAS, MBA, etc.). Service: All academic and non-academic activities of a mainly routine nature, proven academic methods, processes or systems, without a direct connection to research and development. That also includes special, recurring academic work, mainly conducted for the public or private sector performed by university institutions as a legal requirement, performance mandate or technical specification and which is normally subject to a fee.
