Imprisonment and juvenile placement 2016
Small rise in external placement of juveniles and imprisoned adults
Slight increase in number of juvenile placements, high occupancy level of prisons in French-speaking Switzerland
Neuchâtel, 23.01.2017 (FSO) - On 7 September 2016, across Switzerland 477 juveniles were placed outside of their families after having committed an offence. Numbers have risen for the first time since the reference day survey of juveniles in placement started in 2010 (+5%, +22 persons in comparison with the previous year). The long-term trend since 2010, however, is -45%. On the same day, 6912 adults were detained in detention centres (+28 persons in comparison with the previous year). Between 1999 and 2016 the number of detained persons in voluntary anticipatory custody more than doubled to 1032. These are the findings of the latest survey on imprisonment and juvenile detention produced by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).
