Relevance to equality

The participation of people with disabilities in the community and their access to basic infrastructure holds an important place in the Disability Discrimination Act. The Act emphasises in particular the accessibility of public transport, public or large buildings, services related to information and new technologies, and local services (post office, etc.).

Participation in politics and in the community (in local associations for example) are recognised indicators of social participation and of how well people are integrated into society. These indicators provide information about a sense of belonging to a community, having a place there and a right to be heard.
