The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the change in prices of goods and services which are representative of the private households' consumption in Switzerland. It indicates how much consumers have to increase or to decrease their expenditure to maintain the same volume of consumption, despite the variations in prices.

Average annual inflation rate
The term «inflation» is often used to describe the change in the annual average compared with the previous year. This percentage thus describes the change in level of the 12 months of the current year compared with the 12 months of the previous year.

For the ongoing indexation of Swiss franc amounts, the total index is used on a specific index basis. The monthly CPI results are published at the beginning of the following month, the annual averages at the beginning of January of the following year.
