Social cohesion

Solidarity, understanding between people and cultures as well as tolerance are fundamental aspects of sustainable development. Social cohesion and the participation of all social groups and regions in economic, political, social and cultural life are essential prerequisites for a society that functions properly and for its well-being. The principle of “equal rights and equal opportunities” is a key factor here.

Social cohesion is particularly important in a Swiss context: the promotion of internal cohesion is one of the aims of the Confederation (Federal Constitution, art. 2). Furthermore, as Switzerland is a multilingual country, the cultural aspect plays a particular role in the connections between people and as “social cement”.

Social cohesion is not an explicit goal in the 2030 Agenda but is mentioned implicitly in several targets. This is why indicators that touch upon this subject are grouped together in a cross-sectional approach in order to provide an overview of them.
