SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
«[…] In too many places, having a job doesn’t guarantee the ability to escape from poverty. […] Sustainable economic growth will require societies to create the conditions that allow people to have quality jobs that stimulate the economy while not harming the environment. Job opportunities and decent working conditions are also required for the whole working age population. »
Swiss target 8.3: Switzerland provides an ideal environment for the creation, further development and growth of small to medium size businesses (SMEs).
Significance of the indicator
The indicator presents the number of jobs in innovative economic activities as a proportion of total jobs in the secondary and tertiary sectors. The proportion of jobs in innovative economic activities reflects the dynamism of these sectors and therefore the innovative capacity of the economy. Innovative activities can support the transition to an economy that uses resources more efficiently. An increase in the proportion of jobs in these sectors is therefore a step towards sustainable development.
International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.

Methodology
This indicator shows the number of full-time equivalent jobs (FTEs) in innovative economic activities as a proportion of total FTEs jobs in the secondary and tertiary sectors.
The data on number of jobs come from the Structural Business Statistics (STATENT) compiled by the Federal Statistical Office. The list of innovative economic activities is supplied by the Swiss Economic Institute (KOF) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). The KOF draws up this list as part of the surveys on innovation commissioned by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) (surveys conducted every three years until 2011, subsequently every two years). It is the result of a separate analysis of the sectors ‘industry’ and ‘construction & services’. The lists of economic activities are taken from international classifications (OECD and Eurostat).
