Methodology

This indicator shows the percentage of employees working in management or as a director in total employees by sex. Self-employed people, family members working in family business and apprentices are not included. Data come from the Swiss Labour Force Survey (SLFS) conducted by the Federal Statistical Office.
The SLFS has been conducted since 1991, supplying data on the population labour force structure and on people’s behaviour with regard to their professional activity.
The survey questionnaire was modified in 1996. The question “Do you work in management or does your job involve similar responsibilities?”, which until 1995 only employees in management were asked , has been posed to all employees since 1996. For this reason, results before and after 1996 cannot be directly compared with one another.
Since 2010, the SLFS has been a continuous survey (4 quarterly surveys) and the question on professional status has been reworded. Management now covers only people working as a director or on the board of management and not people whose job involves similar responsibilities. Although it was introduced at the start of 2010, this rewording only applies to the whole sample from 1st quarter 2011. Due to changes in the questionnaire, the comparability of data over time is not guaranteed. For this reason, the indicator only shows data from 2011 onwards.

In 2021, the SLFS survey changed from being a survey conducted purely by telephone to a multi-mode survey (via internet and telephone) with priority given to the internet survey.  In addition, the 2021 questionnaire was modified to comply with the new Eurostat regulations, also in force from January 2021. For certain results, these changes have led to a break in the series between 2020 and 2021.
