The Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators has developed a list of 231 indicators to ensure monitoring of the progress made in implementing the 2030 Agenda at global level. The group is held under the auspices of the UN Statistical Committee (UN-STATCOM). Each country is bound to supply data for this indicator set approved by the UN General Assembly on 6 July 2017.
Data are delivered to the relevant UN custodian agency responsible for indicators in its area of expertise. Every year, some 50 agencies take part in the collection and harmonisation of the requested national data, which are then sent to the UN’s Statistics Division for publication.
Switzerland sends data regularly and also contributes to discussions on indicator revisions. Switzerland has chosen a decentralised model for its data delivery as many federal administration units have long-standing direct contact with the UN agencies. In Switzerland, around 30 federal administration units and external stakeholders are currently involved in the production, delivery or validation of data for the IAEG-SDG indicators.
The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) is responsible for coordinating the flow of data from Switzerland to the UN and has set up a network to unite all involved parties. The purpose of this network, stats_agenda2030, is to ensure an efficient data flow between the federal administration and the United Nations’ agencies to avoid an excessive burden on the administration as well as encouraging transparency and the sharing of experiences between partners.
