In order for the classifications of economic activities to correspond to reality (creation, decline and disappearance of activities over time), it is necessary to update them. Furthermore, with the aim of ensuring the international comparability of statistics, the associated revision processes are carried out in a concerted and coordinated manner between the various user countries.
In 2019, the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) has launched the revision of NACE. At the same time, the FSO has also decided to launch a revision process of the NOGA. In March 2021, the United Nations Statistical Office (UNSD) formalized the process of revising the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC).
In May 2022, the new NACE structure (NACE Rev. 2.1) was validated by the European Statistical System Committee (ESSC). The work on the explanatory notes and guidelines accompanying NACE and ISIC will be completed by the end of 2023.
Following the validation of NACE Rev. 2.1, the Nomenclatures Domain of the Federal Statistical Office has drawn up a preliminary version of the new NOGA structure (NOGA 2025). This was submitted to the various revision partners in September
2022 for comments.
Based on this feedback, a first version of the NOGA 2025 was created, and a national consultation was launched in June 2023. The results of this consultation will lead to further minor adjustments to the structure. These adjustments will be
made until the end of 2023.
