This indicator illustrates mothers’ access to the healthcare system.

The infant mortality rate for the permanent resident population of Switzerland as a whole is 3.5‰ for the years 2015-2019. If a distinction is made by the mothers’ nationality, it can be observed that the infant mortality rate does not differ significantly between children born to foreign mothers and those born to Swiss nationals (3.6‰ compared with 3.4‰). Likewise, the infant mortality rate does not vary according to the mothers’ place of birth (3.4‰ for mothers born in Switzerland compared with 3.6‰ for mothers born abroad).

Analysis of the results by major region reveals no statistically significant differences.

Definitions

The infant mortality rate is calculated by dividing the number of deaths of children under the age of 1 born during a civil year by the number of live births in the same civil year. Deaths may occur in the same or the following year. Results are expressed as rates of infant deaths per 1000 live born children.
