Included in the MEHM (Minimum European Health Module, a module incorporated into European health surveys), this indicator focuses on health-related limitations in usual activities that have lasted for at least six months. It can reveal a loss in the ability to assume expected roles in society and to carry out regular activities, thus making it difficult to participate fully in society, which can hamper the possibility of social integration.
Note: On the German and French version of this page, the tables have been updated with the latest data. Graphs and texts will be updated shortly.
In 2020, 22% of the permanent resident population aged 15 and over said that they had been slightly or strongly limited by a health problem in their usual activities for at least six months. 23% of the population without a migration background said that it was more often limited than the population of the second or subsequent generations (18%). The rate of the people from the first generation does not significantly differ from the one of the population without a migration background (22%).
From 2012 to 2020, no significant change can be seen in the proportion of the population without and with a migration background that said they had been slightly or strongly limited in their activities for at least six months.
In most cantons, the population with a migration background is less likely to say it is limited by a health problem in its usual activities than the population with no migration background. This difference by migration status is, however, only significant in the canton of Fribourg (differences of 6 percentage points).
