Families and Generations Survey

The Families and Generations Survey provides statistical data on the lifestyles and living situations of families in Switzerland as well as on the relationships between the generations. It gives answers to the following questions, among others:

  • What variety of forms of cohabitation are there today?
  • How difficult is it to balance work and family life?
  • How many parents have their children looked after by supplementary family care?
  • How do adult children and their parents support each other?

This statistical information is a very important basis for monitoring changes in the situation of families in Switzerland and for social science research in this area. Among other things, the data thus contributes to a targeted orientation of family and generation policy in Switzerland.

The survey is part of the 2010 federal census system and is conducted every 5 years.
