Centenarians

The number of people aged 100 or older in Switzerland rose from 2 in 1910 to 61 in 1970 to 1888 to 2021 - a spectacular increase in one century! But who exactly are these centenarians?

Ageing factors

The ageing of the population and changes to the age structure will become increasingly important over the next few decades and pose major challenges for
the pensions system and the economy.

At a glance

The age pyramid clearly shows that the share of older persons in Switzerland is increasing due to the low birth rate and longer life expectancy. Furthermore, the entry into retirement age of the baby boomers is reinforcing this phenomenon.
