Labour market participation rate

The labour market participation rate or activity rate expresses the proportion of economically active persons (employed and unemployed persons as per the ILO definition) in the reference population. In other words, it is the share of the population offering their services on the labour market.

In 2023, the activity rate of the population aged 15 and over reached 67.7% in Switzerland, one of highest rates in Europe. The labour market participation rate of women (62.6%) was still lower than that of men (72.9%). But the gap has narrowed in comparison with ten years ago (2013: gap of 13.0 percentage points; 2023: 10.3 percentage points).
