Average age of economically active population

The average age of economically active persons was 42.2 years in 2023 compared with 39.0 years in 1991, i.e. an annual average increase of 0.1 year. The foreign workforce is younger than the economically active population of Swiss nationality (40.3 years compared with 43.0 years).

The “agriculture, forestry” sector shows the highest average age (47.9 years in 2023), while the construction sector employed the youngest workforce (40.3 years). Self-employed persons (49.1 years) are on average 6.8 years older than employees (42.3 years).
