Collective knowledge should be increased

Education, research and innovation are essential to the prosperity, social cohesion and in particular to the competitiveness of a country. Highly qualified specialists are needed to drive innovation and development in science and technology.

The overall number of researchers is increasing
  • The overall number of researchers in full-time equivalent (FTE) in the private economy, in universities and in the Confederation has increased by a factor of 1.6 between 1996 and 2015.
  • In Switzerland in 2015, 8,4 out of every 1,000 employed persons were working as researchers (FTE), placing Switzerland in the EU and OECD average.
  • Roughly a third of researchers in Switzerland were women.
