MONET – Passenger transport

Environmental pollution should be reduced as much as possible

Mobility is a basic human need. In addition, it is of high importance for a healthy economy. A decisive factor is the choice of transport: Taking public transport, cycling or walking are not only better for the environment but also healthier.

The public to total transport ratio is increasing
  • Between 1998 and 2016 the share of public transport in the total motorised transport by road and by rail rose from 17.1% to 20.6%.
  • In 2016, 29.3% more person kilometres were covered in private motorised transport and public transport together than in 1998.
  • The share of human-powered mobility (on foot and by bike) in the total transport performed by road and rail transport was 6.0% in 2016. By far the greatest number of person kilometres was covered by car.
