Swiss target 7.1: A sufficient, highly diversified, reliable, profitable and environment-friendly energy supply as well as the resilience of the requisite infrastructure is guaranteed.

Significance of the indicator
This indicator shows gross energy imports (import surplus of energy sources and nuclear fuels) and the amount of energy produced in Switzerland. It shows the ratio between these two values and therefore illustrates Switzerland’s dependence on energy imports. This dependency makes the domestic economy vulnerable and is likely to cause international conflicts given the limited supply of non-renewable resources. A reduction in the import surplus of energy sources is therefore a step towards sustainable development.

International comparability
The data can be compared with the statistics of Eurostat and the International Energy Agency.

The data are from overall energy statistics. These summary statistics are based on several data surveys on energy production and consumption and is compiled by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
