MONET 2030: Participation in cultural activities

SDG 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population taking part in cultural activities as spectators, audiences or visitors, in the population aged 15 and over.

Communication and comprehension among individuals and groups as well as the participation of individuals in social life should be encouraged, in particular through cultural exchange. Cultural practices also help to foster cultural diversity and social integration. An increase, therefore, in the participation in cultural activities, is a step towards sustainable development.

International comparability
The variables surveyed are mainly comparable with those in the European Commission's Eurobarometer no. 399 (2013).

Methodology

The indicator shows the percentage of the population taking part in cultural activities as spectators, audiences or visitors, in the permanent resident population aged 15 and over. Data come from the Federal Statistical Office’s statistics on cultural practices taken from the thematic survey on language, religion and culture (LRCS). A confidence interval of 95% is calculated for these data.

Principles

5a Intercultural and interpersonal understanding
In recognition of the fact that the proper functioning of society and its ability to survive are largely based on the solidarity of its members, exchange and understanding between individuals, groups and people of different ages should be promoted.

5b Social and political participation
Social and political participation should be promoted.
