MONET 2030: Fruit and vegetables consumption

SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Swiss target 2.1: The portion of the population consuming a healthy, balanced and sustainable diet in keeping with the nutritional recommendations of the food pyramid rises to a third.

Swiss target 2.2: The population has a healthy and balanced diet.

Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population that eats at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day (on at least 5 days per week). Fruit and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, which is a basic need and has a recognised influence on health. Dietary habits are guided by personal choices and may be due to social inequalities. An increase in the value of the indicator, therefore, is a step towards sustainable development.

Help for interpretation
It is a sample survey, meaning that values are subject to a margin of error.

Methodology

The indicator shows the percentage of the population that eats at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day (on at least 5 days per week). Data come from the Swiss Health Survey, conducted every five years by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO). It is a sample survey.
The figure of five portions of fruit and vegetables comes from dietary recommendations from the Swiss Nutrition Society, which advises people to eat three portions of vegetables and two portions of fruit every day.
