SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
"[…] many challenges exist to maintaining cities in a way that continues to create jobs and prosperity while not straining land and resources. […] The future we want includes cities of opportunities for all, with access to basic services, energy, housing, transportation and more."
Swiss target 11.6: The population is protected from noise and vibration so that their health is safeguarded. Calm living environments are protected and encouraged.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population that says they are rather or very disturbed by road traffic noise at home during the day. As noise has a negative impact on health and quality of life, a reduction in this rate, therefore, is a step towards sustainable development.
Help for interpretation
The indicator is based on a sample survey of perceived noise. The indicator does not cover noise at home at night or at work.
International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.

Methodology
The indicator shows the percentage of the permanent resident population aged 15 to 74 that says they are rather or very disturbed by road traffic noise at home during the day.
These data come from the Omnibus surveys conducted by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023. While telephone surveys were conducted in 2011 and 2015, participation in the 2019 and 2023 surveys was possible either by telephone or online. More than 90% of respondents participated online. This change in the method, as well as a revised weighting model in 2019, result in a break in the data series for part of the results.
Targets
Swiss target 11.6: The population is protected from noise and vibration so that their health is safeguarded. Calm living environments are protected and encouraged.
International target 11.6: By 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management.
