Swiss target 3.a: Switzerland ratifies the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the share of the population aged 15 and over that state that they smoke. Smoking is harmful to health and can therefore have a negative impact on the quality of life. It is a risk factor for cardiovascular as well as chronic respiratory diseases and various types of cancer. A reduction in the smoking rate is therefore a step towards sustainable development.
Help for interpretation
It is a sample survey, meaning that values are subject to a margin of error.
International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.

Methodology
The indicator shows the share of the population living in private households that state that they smoke. Data come from the Swiss Health Survey (SHS) that is carried out by the FSO once every five years. The questionnaire is based on a sample.
Targets
Swiss target 3.a: Switzerland ratifies the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
International target 3.a: Strengthen the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in all countries, as appropriate.
