Goal description

Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. Swiss target 3.5: The percentage of population with substance abuse or addiction is reduced. Substance addicts get the help and treatment they need.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the percentage of the population with chronic heavy alcohol consumption. Chronic alcohol consumption can have a lasting negative effect on health and cause diseases such as alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. It can lead to addiction and affect people’s behaviour, causing accidents, violence and a reduction in productivity at work. To move in the direction of sustainable development, harmful alcohol consumption must be reduced.
International comparability
The indicator cannot be compared directly with the World Health Organization's Global Information System on Alcohol and Health - GISAH.

Methodology
The indicator shows the percentage of the population with medium to high risk patterns of alcohol consumption in the permanent resident population aged 15 or over living in a private household. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations, consumption of at least 4 standard alcoholic drinks per day for men and 2 for women is a medium risk pattern of alcohol consumption. High risk consumption according to the WHO is at least 6 glasses per day for men and at least 4 for women.
The data come from the Swiss Health Survey, conducted every five years by the Federal Statistical Office. A confidence interval of 95% is calculated for these data.
Targets
Swiss target 3.5: The percentage of population with substance abuse or addiction is reduced. Substance addicts get the help and treatment they need.
International target 3.5: Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol
