SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
« Energy is central to nearly every major challenge and opportunity the world faces today. Be it for jobs, security, climate change, food production or increasing incomes, access to energy for all is essential. Sustainable energy is opportunity – it transforms lives, economies and the planet. […]»
Swiss target 7.3: A 43-per cent reduction in average annual per capita energy consumption and a 13-per cent reduction in power consumption by 2035 is achieved, as compared to the situation in the year 2000.
Significance of the indicator
The indicator shows the amount of energy consumed per capita in Switzerland every year. It takes into account all types of consumer (households, industry, services and transport). The indicator shows if a decoupling takes place between energy consumption and demographic evolution. Energy consumption contributes to the use of natural resources, and in turn to environmental pollution. A reduction in energy consumption is therefore a step towards sustainable development.
Help for interpretation
Energy consumption varies in the short term based on the economic situation and weather conditions. In the longer term, it depends on economic situation, the state of technology, the number of homes and vehicles, lifestyles or policy. The decrease in 2020 is explained in particular by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
International comparability
This indicator cannot be compared at international level.
Comments: indicator assessed according to the Swiss target (-43% compared to 2000 by 2035).

Methodology
This indicator presents final annual energy consumption per capita in gigajoules (average permanent resident population).
It does not include energy consumption generated by international air traffic.
The figures relating to final energy consumption come from the overall energy statistics. These summary statistics, which are compiled by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, are based on various surveys of energy production and consumption.
The data on international air traffic, which are subtracted from this indicator, are calculated as part of the greenhouse gas inventory compiled by the Federal Office for the Environment.
The data on average permanent resident population come from the Population and Households Statistics (STATPOP) compiled by the Federal Statistical Office. This figure indicates the average population living in Switzerland over the course of a year, according to economic place of residence. It is mainly used to calculate non-demographic indicators.
